Halloween

So I just spent the last while looking at facebook pictures of delightful Halloween antics. This has accomplished several things:
1. I now kind of wish I had done something on Halloween or even had a costume.
2. I've realized that it's kind of hard to tell what some people are when you're not there to ask them.
3. Most of all, it's made me wish I had been there in Wisconsin, dressing up ridiculously and having more fun than should be allowed. You know I would have been right there, dancing the Thriller dance in the front row and running around eating lots of candy like a little kid. But I wasn't. I stayed inside, dressed in normal clothes sans candy, listening to the pouring rain and trying to find something good to watch on tv (and largely failing).

So my last college Halloween was a non-event, across the ocean, with people I've only known for a matter of months. Don't get me wrong, I love Spain, but this is one of those things I knew I was going to miss, and now I am even more than I expected to. I think I may be ready to come home in six-ish weeks. Although it would be pretty sweet to see a Spanish Navidad, I'm very glad I won't miss the family traditions on my most favorite of holidays.

Other than occasional bouts of homesickness, though, Spain is a wonderful place and I could see myself living here (or at the very least spending great quantities of time here).

It's really gorgeous and sunny outside, which makes me sad. All or most of my hanging-out-outside friends are gone! Which mostly means Nate, although Mike and Eric too. Being one of the last ones around definitely does suck. I'm hoping being able to see my senior friends graduate will be worth it ...

This is horrible; I've run out of ways to procrastinate on the Internet!

I'm afraid I might actually have to do my papers now....

Only a week and a half before I come home! and like 20 pages to write before then...

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End has now been out for five days and I've only seen it once. That should be remedied.

I'm getting a single next year, which is really exciting. I won't have to be quiet when I don't want to, I won't have to change into pajamas and take out my contacts in the dark, I won't have to deal with people when I want to be alone, and I won't ever have to see a certain person if I don't want to! Plus like one whole wall of my room will be windows, but it's on the second floor, so possible voyeurism will be at a minimum. Excellent!

... Warn Them about Your Jagged Left Nut?

Chick on cell: You're gonna go rubbin' your balls all over other girls and I can't even...?

In other news, I petted a St. Bernard yesterday, which made me happy and caused me to decide that I want one, even though it would be a ton of work and slobber and hair. I also decided to definitely be a Linguistics/English double major. I have yet to declare it, but I'm gonna do it. I'm going to talk to one of the English professors to see how I'm doing for that one (I already talked to my Linguistics advisor), but I'm pretty sure that I can easily finish both of them in the next two years without ever overloading ... plus, I'll be able to go to Spain for a term!! I'm so excited for life; I was all last week. I got pretty stressed over the weekend and I haven't gotten too much sleep lately, but my excitement for life remains.
Yay!!

just read that quote up there a couple more times; it gets funnier!

Warning: the following post contains many switches in tense, and I don't feel like fixing it.

Well, Saturday was like the best day ever! well, at least in a while, even though I did have to get up super early.

So here's the scoop: got up at like 7:45, ready to go and excited (you'll find out why later), go join a bunch of girls and we all go to the salon to get our hair done! This was the first time I'd ever gotten my hair done, and it was really cool. They curled it all and side-parted it and pulled it back on both sides, and it ended up being really big and really cute and even 1940s, which was the intent (again, you'll find out why later)! So all of this took about an hour and a half, so by the time I get home it's like 11 and both of my roommates have gone out to eat or do work or whatever. So I bum around online for like an hour, nice and relaxing, and then go eat lunch/brunch with friends (Saturday brunch is like my favorite meal of the week at Downer). They notice my hair, we're talking about how much crap they put in it and how it sounds all crinkly when I move, which is fun and gross at the same time, and then the guy sitting right next to me goes "So, you already got your hair done?" in the middle of this conversation. We laugh, make fun of him, it's a good time. Then, after lunch, I go out with Mike and Eric to this orchid/greenhouse plant shop because Eric has recently become obssessed with carnivorous plants and wanted some more (we've been taking bets on how long they'll stay alive; I've got two weeks). It was pleasantly sketchy, being way out in farmland, run from a farmhouse with little to no signage and a little out-of-the-way door into the shop. The extreme humidity of the greenhouse felt good as opposed to the freezing cold, and there was a very friendly cat lying on one of the tables -- Mike and I played with the cat while Eric shopped for plants.
From there we went to the thrift shoppe with a couple other people, which was fun because I hadn't been there in a very long time and had been wanting to go. Eric found this ridiculous fur coat that looked like a bunch of rabbit pelts had been thrown in a blender and sewn into a coat shape and a fakey pimp type hat and made Mike put on this most excellent outfit. He even did a rapper pose, and its hilarity has been captured on cell phone film for the amusement of the populace. Eric also found some weird "hats," one of which consisted of a ring of black velvet and a veil, which I promptly rejected. I did find a really cute 40s type skirt and these really pretty black pumps with scallopy edges for like 7 bucks total. I was particularly excited about the shoes, as black pumps have been my latest shoe quest. Mike got a newsie-esque hat that looked pretty hot on him and a matching coat and pants and all; he looked classy and 40s and really good. (If you're sensing a 1940s theme, you're right; you'll see why soon!)
Our shopping accomplished, we head back to my room, where a deliciously decadent chocolate cake from home awaits us, along with curly candles and a few presents for me (being, after all, my birthday). The highlights of the presents were a naughty Shakespeare mug, printed with Shakespearean metaphors, euphemisms, and innuendoes, and a certificate for a half hour professional massage. Everybody comes over, and we devour the better part of the cake in a very short time. I call my mom and put her on speakerphone so everyone can tell her how delicious the cake is. After this we go to dinner, have a good time there, and then Sarah decides it's about time for her to get dressed for the evening's activities, and we disperse. I go borrow some of Sarah's earrings, really long dangly ones with stars at the bottoms, and her nail kit thing and make my nails all shiny. Then it's about time for the rest of us to go dress, so I go to my room and put on my new skirt and various other can-pass-for-40s attire and makeup. Mike dons his new outfit and comes to pick me up to go to ... (drumroll please) ... a 1940s themed "Home from the War" swing dance at a church across the street!! Yes, this is the "you'll find out why" part, and the climax of the day.
This fantastic event lasted for four hours, and I was there for all of it and danced for most of it, getting exhausted and super energetic by turns all night. I had so much fun it seemed more like two hours than four, and I danced with all my favorite partners and watched some excellent dancing when I was too tired to be dancing myself. Everyone looked so good and had so much fun. A point of amusement: a girl I don't particularly like showed up wearing, guess what, the rejected hat from the thrift shop! The live band they had was very good, but they could have done without the vocalist, and she could have done without all the talking between songs. Nevertheless, I danced my heart out and I can't describe how much fun it was! We came back to campus and ordered pizzas, but I was so tired by then I could barely stay awake, so I came back here and fell into bed, a lovely ending to a fantastic day.

Sooo much fun.

Well, this sucks. I don't want to go back to Lawrence. I want to stay here with my sister and my friends and relax, not have to deal with classes and work and finding a job and other people. I mean, of course there are some people I'm excited to see again, but I could put that off another week or so to stay here. I just ... Don't ... want to go back into the swing of things there. I'm sure everything will be fine and not as bad as I think/fear, but I still don't want to face it/her. I don't want to have to find out how it's going to be, whether it will be better or worse than before break. I don't want my fears to be confirmed, but it's hard to imagine them being contradicted, especially if past events are any guide. I can't help but feel pessimistic about what'll happen the next two terms, and that's probably not helping in the slightest. God, I hope it's better when I get back, and not only for myself.
Plus I only saw my friends here once or twice, and I'd love to see them again, for longer periods of time, before I leave again. It doesn't feel like it's been three weeks, and all I want right now is to be able to stay here and sleep and then have time to hang out. I still haven't gotten caught up on sleep from before break and I'm about to go back to not getting enough sleep any night. I really just feel like crying and I have for the past day or two and I don't know exactly why. I know some of the reasons, but not all of them ... dammit.

Well, happy new year everybody.

Nah, She's Faking the Hysteria, Too

Boyfriend: I'm sorry, I just can't be with you anymore. You're too clingy.
Girlfriend: I'm not clingy! I fucked, like, ten other guys!
Boyfriend: While we were dating?
Girlfriend: Whatever, it was because you're not that good in bed. Oh, yeah, I faked all my orgasms, by the way. And my boobs? --Aren't water balloons!
Boyfriend: Dude. First of all, we're on a motherfucking-packed subway. Second of all, being a crazy bitch isn't going to help your case.
Girlfriend starts crying hysterically: You can't break up with me! I love you! I love you! I love you!
Stranger, to boyfriend: If you're thinking of killing yourself after this, I sell knives.

Essence Of NYC: A Play in One Act

Bimbo tourist #1: Anyway, so when he pulled it out of me it made this farting noise, and I know it wasn't a fart because it didn't smell, and... It was just really embarrassing.
Bimbo tourist #2: Quip.
Bimbo tourist #1: What?
Bimbo tourist #2: A quip. The farting noise, it's called a 'quip.'
Bimbo tourist #1: Oh, they have a name for it? Wow.
Bimbo tourist #2: Oh, totally. It happens to a lot of people.
Stranger: Um, that's not right.
Bimbo tourist #2: Excuse me, sir?
Stranger: No, it's 'queef.'
Bimbo tourist #2: Wait, what?
Bimbo tourist #1: I think he's saying his name is 'Queef' or something.
Bimbo tourist #2: Oh, sorry. Excuse me, Queef?
Stranger: No... Oh, lord. The sound, it's 'queef.'
Bimbo tourist #2: Who's a 'queef?' What's going on?
Bimbo tourist #1: I think he's one of those crazy subway guys you hear about. I think he's telling us he's gay.
Stranger: I can hear you, and I'm not... What? That's 'queer,' you ingrate!
Bimbo tourist #1: Here's some money for you, sir. Buy your boyfriend a nice grocery cart or something.
Stranger: What?! Does it look like I'm homeless to you? I'm wearing fucking YSL over here... I ain't queer and I ain't homeless. You ignorant, you skinny, Paris Hilton-wannabe whores. All I was saying to you was that when your sleazy-ass friend over here pulled her boyfriend's dick out of her STD-ridden pussy, the word...
Bimbo tourist #1: I'm not following... Is he speaking Cockney or something?
Bimbo tourist #2: I don't know. Are you allowed to mace crazy hobos?
Stranger: ...I'm not fucking crazy!
Bimbo tourist #2: Of course you aren't, sir.
Passenger: Oh, shut your mouth, both of ya, or I'm gonna whoop both your scrawny asses, you hear?
Stranger: Thank you. All I was saying was...
Old lady: Ah, hell no! Can't you see this conversation has gone past anyone in this damn subway's comprehension? Know when to drop it, brother. Know when to drop it.
Bimbo tourist #2: [Mouthing] Oh my god.
Bimbo tourist #1: I know. That was intense.
Stranger, muttering to himself: ... Last time I ever take a subway... Unbelievable shit I put up with... Fucking Civics... Unreliable fuckers...

So I wasn't going to audition for Rocky Horror, in fact I didn't, but due to a movement of the date of the show one girl can't do it, so it looks like I'm going to be playing Columbia for at least the 8:30 show (probably not the later one) on Nov. 3. I'm kind of excited, really.

I'm also going to be in the Chorale. With that and everything else I seem to have a pretty busy schedule.

That's all.

Love!!

this is ridiculous and awesome

Guy #1: You know that Anton Webern's Quartet for the End of Time was performed in a concentration camp? Crazy.
Guy #2: Yeah. He died real weird. I forget how. I think the Nazis shot him.
Total stranger: Actually he was shot by Allied soldiers. He was breaking curfew smoking a cigarette, and they mistook him for his brother-in-law, who was an alleged Nazi spy.
Guy #1: Oh, I see. Thanks.
Total stranger: Any other questions? I just ride this train all day waiting to answer questions on twentieth-century music composition. The next car has an expert on Chekhov, and the conductor studies philosophy.
Guy #1: So anyway, Slavic girls are pretty hot.
Guy #2: Yeah, for real.

so it looks like that audition was worth about squat. no callback for lizzy, hence, no part. not to sound emo, but it will be difficult to possibly pursue a theatre performance major if i never get cast.

i should just stick with linguistics. it doesn't judge you and find you wanting.

dammit.

Proselytizer: Listen! Listen to me! You must abstain! Abstinence is the only way! I tell you the truth--if you have sex, you will get pregnant, you will get an STD, and you will die!

it's ridiculous how much i want to be back at lawrence. i even started missing the class part of college earlier tonight. how sad is that?

i really need a project of some sort. perhaps i'll attempt to make myself a pirate shirt before the pirate festival in september. luckily i can go to said festival, as i won't quite have left yet.

but damn, i want to get back.

on an unrelated note, i saw snakes on a plane the other night. it wasn't as bad as I had feared; i won't say it was good, but it wasn't terrible. pretty funny i guess. i like the part where the two people are getting it on in the bathroom and then the snake bites her nipple. a lot of deaths happened in the bathrooms, come to think of it .... well, three.

anyway, i think it's bedtime for lizzy. good night all!

you know when they say 'desire is the cause of suffering' ("they" being the Buddha in this case)? well, I've decided that it actually is true, at least to some extent. for instance, if you miss someone and are sad because of it, you desire to be with that person and are suffering because your desire is not satisfied. if you are jealous of someone, you desire something that they have, whether it be an object, like an iPod, or some intangible, like true love, and you suffer once again becuase you do not have said thing. granted, this is not deep suffering, not the kind of pain that causes one to commit suicide or something, but I think that Buddha guy was onto something.

ummmm....

Pirates are amazing! I knew this already.

Although I'm becoming maybe a little bit disenchanted with them (particularly the "of the Caribbean" variety) because of all the overhype and shameless merchandise everywhere one looks.

Not to say I don't still love pirates. Because I definitely do.

But I don't like to have/buy/wear things that are superpopular because it makes me feel like a poser. I know I'd buy/wear whatever the item in question is because I like it and because it makes me happy (and not because it's "the cool thing to do"), but I'd still feel like a conformist. I suppose it's because I think other people will just look at me and scoff "poser. she's just wearing that because it's so popular right now. in a month she won't be wearing it anymore." I'd probably think the same about someone I didn't know anything about other than their apparel.

And this is disturbing to me. Not only because it makes me admit that I'm more judgemental than I'd like to be, but also because it makes me admit that I do care what people think of me. And not just the people I know, either. I want everyone to like me and think well of me, and I hate it when I suspect or know that someone --anyone-- doesn't like or respect me.

And I keep telling myself that other people's opinions don't matter for my happiness. I try to make that true, but there is a part of me that is and always will be incredibly dependent on the good opinion of others for its own happiness. The best I can do is try to make that part smaller and less influential.

Screw other people, pirates are awesome and still will be in a few months when the world takes no more notice! At least they will always have a place in my heart.

(Especially Johnny Depp, because that man is just too attractive for words!)
